XM8 CC by Hoborginc XM8 CC by Hoborginc
One approach to further developing the XM8, shedding some of its unique parts in exchange for conforming closer to standards.

1. Accepts AR-15 stocks and pistol grips, both to take advantage of existing inventories and to allow for aftermarket customization.

2. The carry handle is removed completely and the charging handle is reconfigured to be easily accessible with the new full-length rail, which is there to allow for a full range of optics packages.

3. The magwell is changed to accept regular NATO magazines, to simplify logistics. You could say that the magazine is the worst part of the AR-15, but improved aftermarket mags solve this issue. The magazine release is also changed to a push-button type.

4. There are symmetrical ejection ports on both sides, both to allow for right-left conversion, and to improve cooling.

5. There are holes to mount side rails for AN/PEQs, flashlights, etc, in lieu of the original PCAP holes.

The internals remain unchanged from the Hk XM8, and the bolt release inside the trigger guard is retained, as is compatibility with the XM320 underbarrel grenade launcher.

The charging handle can be removed and inserted on the opposite side at the operator's preference.

This is actually really really good.

No PCAPS or Keymod?

Although I understand the PCAPS system was, technologically, a better mounting system, at least for optics, my goal here was to envision something more traditional, with less reliance on proprietary parts.

You're right that Keymod would be better overall, though.

Can it still equip a grenade launcher?

The bottom handguard is still the same, so yes, the same modular devices apply.

Why the push-button release? Doesn't it detract from ambidextrous shooting? (lefty here with this problem)

The intent was to have a button on each side. There are existing AR parts that already do this.

I just incorrectly omitted or covered the elongated part of the mag catch that actually touches the magazine and should be exposed through the left side of the magwell.

I made a PMG rendition based off of this, I hope you like it. Very simple stuff though, nothing fancy.

WOW! Great Work! An AR15/XM8 Hybrid! That's a good way to live again the XM8!
Moreover, an Improved Version of it! Now you are able to choose different Stocks and Pistol Grips, to use a Top Mounting Rail for Accessories and lastly to use STANAG Compatible Magazines...
Remarkable! Nicely done!

Nice work!
Only thing im not shure about is that a double ejection(for also better cooling) will work with the smart gas-system that makes the XM to one of the best recoil-compensatet assaultrifles of our days....
Detail i know - but everytime a guy mindet about his work im happy and trie to help(not to bigmouth....);)

Wait. So it's essentially an H&K manufactured AR-180b? Don't get me wrong, it's definitely an improvement over the XM8, it just seems... redundant with the existence of the AR-180b.

:iconhoborginc:
Hoborginc Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2012
Main difference is that it has ambidextrous features, and comes issued with an RIS and stock, whereas you would need to modify an AR180b to attach them. Other differences include polymer construction and shorter barrel.

But you are right in that it would be much more efficient to simply produce AR-18 variants.

How much would it be to have it made with aircraft-grade aluminum, suppressor, 4x night-vision scope, a night-vision compatible laser sight, a spare cleaning kit, a plastic manual that details every part, and a package of 600 windowed magazines, all with customized Depleted Uranium Core?

..should be at least 2 grand.

On the internet, I am very rich, as is any other standard-IQ person on here.

Hoborginc Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2012
Well, if the basic package is $2,500 (high estimate due to Hk and start of production), and the rest is aftermarket parts, let's see:

A night scope will cost you roughly $1000 multiplied by which generation night vision you want.
An IR device like an AN/PEQ costs around $2000.
Suppressor costs $400 minimum (Yankee Hill).
Cleaning kit and armorer's manual should total to $50.
600 is an inordinate number of magazines and should cost around $8,000, but in those quantities you could probably get considerable discounts. However, note that 7 mags are included in base package and that's how many an operator usually carries.
No idea how much custom DU rounds would cost, but assuming, for simplicity's sake, it would cost about $1 per round (regular 5.56 is $0.23-$0.76), it would cost $18,210 for enough ammo to fill 607 magazines.
The weapon body is polymer and there is no aluminum variant.

Therefore, the final price should be:
$5,950 minimum for rifle, optics (Gen 1 NV), AN/PEQ, suppressor, cleaning kit, and armorer's manual with maximum $8,950 with Gen 4 NV (though in reality a Gen 4 may cost even more).
$18,210 for ammo
$8,000 for magazines (dunno why would you want 600 of them...)

Thus, minimum is $27,760 (with only 7 mags), and maximum is $39,760+, which is enough to equip over 200 soldiers in the early 20th century.

By contrast, a basic night combat setup (rifle with Gen 3 NV, AN/PEQ, manual, cleaning kit, the mags that come with it, and a can of 420 rounds of Lake City ammo) would cost $7,720.

In any case, yes, it is over 2 grand.

How much per unit?
Reply
:iconhoborginc:
Hoborginc Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2012
Assuming a unit includes no optics, 2 short side rails, MIAD pistol grip, CTR stock, and 7 windowed PMAGs...

Considering the XM8 is an Hk design, the receiver and majority of the components would be manufactured by Hk. The furniture and magazines are manufactured by Magpul, and the rails by Troy.

Initially, prices should be about $1,200 per unit, plus about $1,300 more for the Hk brand name.

If it is purchased in large numbers (as in adoption by an armed service), the price should drop to $700, plus $800 for Hk brand name.

The ideal solution would be to get another manufacturer to license it from Hk and sell it cheaper.
